Building the Brigantines - Part 4

(September 24 , 2002) Carpenters take center stage as they create and install all of the custom-built wooden interior components. This view of the main cabin shows work in progress on the sole (floor) and the galley above.
More sails and rigging are being added, creating the web of rope you see here. The ships were intentionally designed to provide plenty of line handling opportunities for their youthful crew, allowing each young sailor to take an active and important role in operating the vessel.
(November 11, 2002) A barge and floating crane are used to move the booms, yards, anchor rode, ship's stoves and other heavy components from the yard adjacent to the dock. In this photo Exy Johnson recieves her boom.

Riggers watch from above as the crane hoists a yardarm to Exy Johnson's forward mast. Once the yards are in place, more rigging and sails can be attached.

Progress on Irving Johnson (right) is a bit farther along with more of her rigging and sails in place. Here, the crane raises another yardarm toward Exy Johnson's forward mast.
(December, 2002) The navigation room aboard Exy Johnson, showing the seats under construction.
Further forward, in the galley, the stove and cooler are installed. Workers can be seen in the main cabin below through an opening that will eventually receive a ladder.
Topside on Irving Johnson, more rigging is in place and most of the sails are mounted. The helm and woodwork have received another coat of varnish. Despite a tangle of tools and power cords running about, the main deck takes on a more "finished" look.
Exy Johnson being prepped by LAMI volunteers for another public appearance. She'll lead the annual Port of Los Angeles holiday boat parade later this evening.
The forward cabin prior to the ladder being installed from the companionway above. Bunks are being built, but there's still no door leading to the head and shower.
In the main cabin more progress is being made on the bunks and sole. All the wood surfaces are being sanded, painted and varnished.
